Ty is a great athlete who tries to get on a 7 on 7 team to prove that he is a great football player. But Ty learns that there is a team that has a player that can predict a play before it happens. As this is going on, the mafia is after him and his uncle. Ty also has a brother who plays for the Jets. During one of his games, he gets hurt. When Ty's brother is in the hospital, Ty is scared the mafia might try to go to the hospital and get his brother.
I liked this book because it is exciting and an adventure. It was also a page turner.

The Mighty Miss Malone by Christopher Paul Curtis

This book is about a girl named Deza Malone. Deza lives in Gary, Indiana. Deza is a very smart kid in school. Deza has a big brother named Jimmie. The book is mainly about what happens after their dad has an accident. Since the accident on the fishing trip, everything seems different. It was different in their house because everybody went quiet. It was like their social brain blacked out. Deza wants everything to turn back to normal. She felt like she needed to do something.
I liked this book because Deza Malone is a feisty tween that tries her hardest at everything. Christopher Paul Curtis is my second favorite author and he inspires me to learn more about African American historical fiction.

Notes From an Accidental Band Geek By Erin Dionne

Elsie just started high school and is younger than everyone because she skipped a grade. She ends up having to be in marching band at Henry Herbert High School and playing a mellophone instead of her French horn. This happens because she went on a trip to Austria and missed her audition at Boston Youth Orchestra. At first she’s upset about being in marching band, but then realizes that she loves marching band and she doesn’t have to be like or try to impress her dad because he is already very proud of her. I liked it because it was funny and serious at the same time.

Meeting Marissa Meyer

The author of Cinder came to Mrs. Nelson's Bookstore!

Brianna says:

I saw Marissa Meyer at Mrs. Nelson's Book Shop. I read the first book of the Lunar Chronicles called Cinder. Mrs. Meyer talked a little bit about herself. She talked about her experience in a writing contest. She had to write as many words as she could and the reward was to be on a Star Trek movie. This is how she got the idea for the Lunar Chronicles. Also, she likes fairy tales. What surprised me about her was how young she looked and is.

13 Curses by Michelle Harrison--Samantha

This book is about a girl named Tanya who is sent to stay with her grandmother for a couple weeks. Tanya is no ordinary girl. She has second sight which means she can see fairies. Although the forest is a fun place to explore there is a dark magic within the trees and Tanya soon finds herself stuck in a mystery that leads to complications. I liked it because the ending is unexpected and I liked each character's personality.

Dead to You by Lisa McMann

Dead to You is about a boy named Ethan DeWild who gets abducted at the age of seven by two men and then mysteriously ends up with a woman that poses as his mother for a short amount of time. She abandons him at orphanage. He runs away to find out if he had a family. He returns to his family at the age of sixteen but with no memory of his family at all. His family decides to leave him be until he’s ready to talk about what his life has been like living on the streets and fending for himself; except for his younger brother, Blake. Blake starts to believe that Ethan isn’t who he says he is. This book starts out a bit slow so you’ll need to read for a while to get to the really good parts. I do not recommend this book to the younger, less mature readers. If you want to find out the truth of Ethan you’ll have to read the book.

Zombiekins by Kevin Bolger

This book is about a girl names Miranda and a guy named Stanley. This creepy lady is having a yard sale and Stanley buys a doll called Zombiekins. He starts to walk home and throws away the instruction manual, which clearly says to read it. The instruction manual says that Zombiekins cannot be hit by moonlight. See what happens when Stanley doesn't follow the instructions. I liked the book because it has zombies that pick their noses and eat worms. It was funny.

Cinder by Marissa Meyer

Cinder is a half-robot, half-human mechanic who works for Linh Adri, her step-mom. One day at the market the prince comes to her so she can fix his android, a robot that helps its owner. When she goes to the palace to return it, the queen of the moon recognizes her and knows she's the person she wanted killed long ago. Now the queen wants Cinder dead for good, but Cinder wants to keep the queen from starting a war, which she can't do if she's dead.
I liked the book because it is a futuristic Cinderella story, except Cinder is a robot. However, I didn't get some of the words, which made it a little confusing.

Ashfall by Mike Mullin

The story is about a boy named Alex who is a teenager in Iowa. Alex is left alone for the weekend while his parents and his sister visit relatives in Warren, Illinois. While they are gone, a volcano erupts. The rest of the book is about Alex’s survival in the ash. I liked it because it had nonstop action, a little romance, and very real science. I thought it could really happen which made the book more interesting.

Half Upon a Time by james Riley

The story is about a young teen named Jack, who finds a strange girl lying in front of his cottage. This girl has said to be from another world and is looking for her kidnapped grandmother, who might be the long-lost snow white. Although Jack’s grandfather wants him to find an adventure, who would want to help a conceited “princess”. Ride through different story book versions on Jack and May’s exciting adventure. I liked it because it was a funny, adventure story. I also like the sentimental and humorous parts.

13 Curses by Michelle Harrison

The story is about a girl named Rowan, a.k.a. Red, has been looking for her brother who was taken by vicious fairies for an unknown reason, for a very long time. It isn’t very easy to look for someone you love in a realm full of evil fairies. Along her journey she meets new friends, goes through all kinds of trouble, and makes a surprising bargain. You won’t believe your eyes what Red had to go through. I liked it because it was very mystical, I couldn’t stop reading it and the end was very shocking.

The book is about a girl named Malora who is part of the village. The village was attacked by leather wings. Malora escapes to the bush. Then she comes to a stop, she saw these horses that are half human, half horse. The rest of the book is about Malora’s survival with the centaurs. I liked it because it had action and classical mythology.

The story is about an eleven year old Tom who lives with his mom in a house on a big rock. One day Jeffrey, his mom's boyfriend, proposes to Tom's mom and he gets mad. Tom sneaks out to the river and floats on the packing foam, from the new refrigerator his mom got. He falls asleep while looking at the stars, and then hits his head on a boulder and floats into a cave in a mountain. Tom meets Reg and Argus in the cave and together they try to escape. I liked this book because it was interesting. The way Reg survived in the cave was the most interesting part. It was also exciting because the cave was full of treasure.

DEAD END IN NORVELT by Jack Gantos

This is about a boy named Jack Gantos. He is grounded for the summer for shooting a Japanese sniper rifle. He could only leave the house to do his chores and to help Miss Volker, an old lady who writes obituaries. In Norvelt, the old people are dying and their houses are being sent off to a different state. I liked the book because it had a little mystery. It was a good book but not one of the best I have read.
